More corona patients – regular departments are filling up again

Date:

While Vienna has now also said goodbye to the mask requirement in public transport and court and office buildings, the corona figures and the corresponding number of hospitalized Covid 19 patients in Austria have recently risen again. A further increase can be expected in the normal departments.

On Tuesday, 1582 corona-positive patients were in local hospitals, 86 of whom were in intensive care. The seven-day incidence (number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants, please note) in Austria was 435.8, with Vienna reaching the peak value of the individual states at 639.7 (as of February 28). The district with the highest incidence reported by the Covid-19 dashboard of the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) hit Burgenland – in Oberpullendorf there were 852.1 confirmed corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants. However, the current situation is put into perspective if you look at the situation a year ago. On February 28, 2022, more than 20,000 new infections were registered, the seven-day incidence was at that time 2073.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and there were mainly 2435 people in hospitals with a corona infection, of whom 189 required intensive care.

Rise to normal stations
Nevertheless, the experts of the Covid prognosis consortium do not rule out the possibility that more than 2,000 corona-positive patients will have to be treated again in the normal departments of the hospitals in two weeks. In the current calculation model, a minimum value of 1224 is given for the reference date of March 15, with a maximum of 2257. The calculated average value is 1744. In intensive care, on the other hand, the situation remains stable, the predicted average value is 94. the recent increase Based on the coating numbers, it can be assumed that the covid-specific coating will remain below the peak values of the past year within the forecast period,” the consortium emphasizes.

Many hospitalized with Corona
In its weekly Corona report last Monday, AGES pointed out that the number of hospital patients testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 had risen by 64 percent within two weeks. In intensive care units, Covid 19 bed occupancy had more than doubled. However, currently only 24 percent of all corona cases in hospitals are admitted to normal wards due to Covid-19 symptoms, while more than three-quarters of those who tested positive were hospitalized for other reasons. For 76 percent, the primary diagnosis is no longer Covid-19 – a marked shift when you look at the whole pandemic. Calculated over the period since the outbreak of the pandemic, the proportion of patients with covid-19 as a secondary diagnosis is 54 percent.

abwasser gives hope for a decline
In terms of the number of cases, wastewater monitoring data – currently available until February 22 – points to a temporary halt to the rising trend in contamination rates. According to the Covid forecast consortium, lab-confirmed cases should not increase further until mid-month.
