Russians for conquest? – Wagner boss cheers: “Bachmut practically surrounded”

Date:

The Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, which has been under attack for months, is said to be “virtually surrounded” by Russian forces. That is what the head of the Russian mercenary group Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said on Friday. The Ukrainian armed forces would have only one way out.

Prigozhin called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to withdraw his troops from the city that Wagner has been trying to capture for months.

The Ukrainian army is not giving up yet
The Ukrainian army previously announced that it had repelled numerous Russian attacks in the Bakhmut area in the east of the country. In the past 24 hours, more than 85 attacks in the five main sectors on the front there have been repelled, the Ukrainian army general staff said Friday morning.

Attacks on Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Kherson
In the southern regions of Zaporizhia and Kherson, more than 45 cities have come under Russian fire in the past 24 hours. Russia continues to attack civilians in Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions from the air. Russia has repeatedly denied targeting civilians.

Ukrainian leaders have said Bakhmut has limited strategic value in the Donetsk region, but wants to prevent Russian advances. Russia, on the other hand, hopes that the capture of Bakhmut will be an important step towards conquering the rest of the surrounding industrial area of Donbass, which consists of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Dead after rocket hits
After the Russian missile hit a residential building in the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia, two more people were found dead on Friday morning. This has been announced by the Ukrainian Civil Protection. The death toll from Thursday’s attack has risen to at least four. Eight people in the multi-storey building were injured. Several residents were also missing. Selenskyj had announced retaliation in his video address on Thursday.
