Perpetrators on the run – D: robbery of millions on money transporter

Date:

A spectacular, cinematic robbery of a money transporter took place in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on Thursday. The men, armed with submachine guns, stopped the money transporter at a “staged construction site” on Autobahn 20 and, according to the police, made off with several million euros. The perpetrators are on the run and they are being sought.

The presumably two masked perpetrators armed with submachine guns had stopped the vehicle of a security company at the entrance to Autobahn 20 near Gützkow (Vorpommern-Greifswald) on Thursday morning. They also fired shots, police said. How often and where exactly is not yet known for tactical reasons. The two security company employees were not injured.

Money transporter stopped at “staged construction site”.
According to the police, the long preparation for the crime and the procedure itself speak for organized crime. As a “staged construction site”, massive concrete sections were placed at the motorway entrance, stopping the money transporter and preventing the vehicle from escaping.

The perpetrators had apparently brought the signs from the wrong construction site to the crime scene days before the attack. As a spokesperson for the northeastern branch of the Autobahn GmbH des Bundes said, a route inspection on Monday revealed signs leaning against the guardrail at the Gützkow exit on the hard shoulder. After inquiries internally and at construction companies were negative, it was decided to clear the signs during the next regular household waste collection on Thursday morning. The robbery of the money transporter then took place on Thursday morning.

Offenders put two vehicles in the tire
After the money transporter was forcibly opened from behind, it was looted and set on fire. According to the information, the perpetrators fled with their million-dollar loot in one of their two vehicles. They allegedly set fire to the second and also set fire to the rear of the money transporter. Hours later, the getaway vehicle was found burnt out six miles away in a wooded area, complete with an empty cash container. There was a good chance that another getaway car was waiting there, he said.

According to further findings, the robbers probably knew the company’s tours better. The attacked transport was on its way from Greifswald to the branch of the Bundesbank in Neubrandenburg with a large sum of money, according to a police spokeswoman. The money, presumably income from businessmen, should probably be paid there, it was said. The exit Gützkow A20 is the fastest southern connection from Greifswald to Neubrandenburg.

Even if precise information is still missing, this could be the largest amount of money that fell into the hands of criminals in a robbery in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In September 2005, robbers attacked a security company in Greifswald and stole the daily receipts of several supermarkets and shops – according to information at the time, 2.75 million euros.
