US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday emphasized their joint support for Ukraine in its defensive battle against Russia. Both countries are working together and strengthening NATO’s military alliance, Biden said Friday before a meeting at the White House. It is very important to get the message across that the Allies will continue to support Ukraine, Scholz stressed.
The German chancellor flew to Washington to talk privately with Biden about further developments in Ukraine. Both politicians are also expected to discuss dealings with China and US subsidies for climate-friendly technologies.
Scholz believes that relations between Germany and the United States are better than they have been for years. “I think that is important at a time when we are challenged by Russia’s terrible war of aggression against Ukraine,” the SPD politician said during his brief visit to Washington on Friday. “But also in the long term it will be important that we continue to develop this transatlantic cooperation.” The basis for this is trust, which is created by continuing to talk to each other. “That’s exactly what we do.”
More US military aid to Ukraine
Meanwhile, the United States is offering Ukraine new military aid worth $400 million (about €377 million) to defend itself against Russia’s offensive war. The package mainly contains ammunition, for example for US-supplied HIMARS multiple rocket launchers and howitzers, the US State Department reported on Friday. Ammunition for Bradley armored personnel carriers is also included.
According to the latest Pentagon figures, US military aid to Ukraine since the start of the war has totaled more than $32 billion, not counting the new package. The United States is considered Ukraine’s main ally in defense against the Russian invasion.
In late January, after much back-and-forth and parallel to Germany’s deployment of Leopard tanks to Kiev, the US government also announced that it would deliver 31 M1 Abrams main battle tanks to Ukraine. Their deployment is expected to take some time.
