Suddenly many strangers – cocaine washed up – warning for “drug tourists”

Date:

Authorities have warned of “drug tourism” after more than two tons of cocaine washed up on beaches in northern France. The headlines about the cocaine packages on the Channel coast had attracted dozens of people plowing the beaches – some in quad off-road vehicles. The public prosecutor of Rennes, Philippe Astruc, therefore warned against “drug tourism” on Friday.

He threatened anyone with up to ten years in prison “who takes one of these suits and takes it away”. There is also a health risk, he added. Cocaine use can be deadly.

Dozens of sanding beaches
Neighbors in the villages on the northern French coast had reported that many strangers had suddenly turned up, including in luxury cars and quad off-road vehicles. They would have combed the sand on the beaches.

The watertight wrapped drug packages had been found on two beaches in Normandy in recent days. The first batch of drugs was discovered last Sunday on the beach of Réville. It involved more than 800 kilos of cocaine.

Investigators expect more drugs to be found
Then more drugs were found on the nearby beach of Vicq-sur-Mer on Wednesday. Researchers assume that more drugs may wash up on the beaches. The found cocaine has an estimated market value of 150 million euros.

The origin of the drugs is still unknown. Drug dealers may have voluntarily jettisoned it to avoid arrest. Or, according to another theory, the drugs were washed overboard in violent waves.
