Burning Tires – Peru: Opposition blocked two roads to Lima

Date:

Peru has been gripped by unrest since the ousting and arrest of left-wing President Pedro Castillo on December 7, 2022. At dawn on Friday, opposition supporters blocked two main routes leading north and east from the capital Lima with burning tires (see video above).

The demonstrators called for the resignation of Castillo’s successor, Dina Boluarte, and the dissolution of parliament so that new elections could be held immediately, but then retreated peacefully. The police have not arrested anyone, reports Prensa Latina news agency.

Dozens of people have been killed in protests
For weeks, protesters have been demanding the resignation of Castillo’s fellow party member Boluartes. The protests have repeatedly led to bloody clashes with the security forces in recent weeks – dozens of people have been killed. A state of emergency has now been declared for almost a third of the Andean country.

As early as December, Boluarte had announced that the parliamentary elections originally scheduled for 2026 would be brought forward by two years. The demonstrations and roadblocks are now leading to shortages of fuel, food and medical supplies in Peru.
