On Saturday afternoon, a cellar fire in Vienna-Leopoldstadt triggered a large-scale operation. With a total of 14 vehicles and 61 emergency services, the fire was extinguished in time.
As fire service spokesperson Bernhard Platzer reported, a resident of the home noticed smoke in the stairwell around 12:45 a.m. and alerted the professional fire department. The basement fire broke out in a residential building for reasons that are still unclear. When the fire brigade arrived, several stairwells were full of smoke, so that the use of breathing masks was carried out.
Difficult extinguishing operation
Due to the fire, the adjacent stairwells were full of smoke, which is why alarm level 2 was issued. Emergency services checked the stairwells and the adjacent apartments and shops. 13 people, including four children, were cared for by the rescue service – which was on the scene with several teams and the special operations group.
The fire was quickly extinguished, but extensive ventilation and control measures were required. There were no injuries. The operation was completed around 3 p.m. The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing.
