Uranium enrichment – Iran agrees to intensify inspections

Date:

The discovery of near-weapon-grade uranium at an Iranian nuclear facility has alarmed Israel and the West. Now the leadership in Tehran, which claims the nearly 84 percent purity level was an “unintentional fluctuation,” has agreed to further inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

This is the result of a meeting between IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi and President Ebrahim Raisi. However, details of the enhanced inspection mode are yet to be clarified by the two sides, according to the joint statement by the international authority and Iran’s nuclear organization AEOI.

Just an accidental spike?
IAEA experts recently found traces of uranium with a purity of 84 percent instead of the expected 60 percent at a nuclear facility in Fordow. Since then, the IAEA has been trying to clarify whether Iran intentionally enriched uranium just below the 90 percent enrichment level suitable for nuclear weapons, or whether it was an accidental spike, as Tehran argues.

According to information from Tehran, in addition to the inspections, the negotiations also involved a dispute over the previously unclear provenance of traces of radioactive material at three locations in Iran. Iran’s political leadership demands that disputes be settled.
