In Breitenbrunn (Burgenland) a large reed fire broke out in the early morning hours. 13 barrages fought the flames for about five hours. The operation was particularly challenging, according to the district fire command in Eisenstadt-Umwelt.
Shortly after one o’clock in the morning, the first emergency calls came in at the state security center: reed fire in Breitenbrunn. The local fire brigade immediately pulled out, but it soon became clear that the comrades needed reinforcements – and thus the fire brigades of Bruckneudorf, Donnerskirchen, Eisenstadt, Jois, Kaisersteinbruch, Neusiedl, Oggau, Parndorf, Purbach Schützen am gebirge, Weidem am See and Winds received a follow-up alert.
Because the flames also threatened to spread to the campsite and an area with mobile homes. But that could be prevented by the quick and courageous intervention of our Florianis.
Five hour mission
“The operation was very challenging because the actual source of the fire was difficult to reach,” fire spokesman Günter Prünner said in an interview with “Krone” on Wednesday morning. “The comrades fought the flames by setting up a locking position,” the experienced firefighter explains the tactic. Individual fire comrades had to be “hoisted” over a water-carrying canal with the turntable ladder and placed on the other side in order to extinguish the fire.
The operation could not be completed until around five o’clock in the morning. Fortunately for the volunteers, the weather was nice. Because if there had been a strong wind, the operation would probably continue now, according to fire circles. A total of 150 comrades with 30 vehicles were deployed.
