The Vatican has established a new observatory for Marian apparitions. This should analyze and interpret possible apparitions of the Holy Mother. In addition, the team will conduct and coordinate investigations worldwide.
The Observatory of Apparitions and Mystical Phenomena Related to the Figure of the Virgin Mary will officially open on Saturday. Phenomena such as apparitions, reports of unexplained cracks on images and inner inspirations are investigated. The Pontifical Marian Academy is responsible. The committee should work regularly, but also meet on site when necessary.
“Clarity is important”
It is important to clarify, “because alleged messages often create confusion, spread frightening apocalyptic scenarios or even accusations against the Pope and the Church,” said the president of the Pontifical Marian Academy, Father Stefano Cecchin. The new facility will “always operate in accordance with the Magisterium of the Church, the competent authorities and the current norms of the Holy See on this subject.”
The Catholic Church considers Marian apparitions to be possible in principle. In Austria there are a number of Marian pilgrimage sites with reports of apparitions such as Absam, Luggau and Marbach, but so far no church-recognized place of apparitions. Internationally known pilgrimage sites are Notre-Dam du Laus (France), Knock (Ireland), Dietrichswalde (Poland) and Guadalupe (Mexico).
