A fighter jet crashed on Wednesday during a training flight in northwestern Russia’s Murmansk Oblast. The accident happened near the city of Monchegorsk, not far from the border with Finland.
According to official information, both pilots were able to escape from the burning aircraft with the help of the ejection seats. Eyewitnesses in the city of Monchegorsk filmed flames shooting from the MiG-31 (see video above). The fighter jet of the Russian Air Force hit an uninhabited area – the cause of the accident is still unclear.
“On April 26, a MiG-31 interceptor crashed during a planned training flight in the Murmansk region,” Russia’s state news agency TASS quoted a statement from the defense ministry in Moscow on Thursday.
Pilots were recovered by emergency medical services
“Both pilots got out. They were immediately rescued by a search and rescue helicopter and their lives and health were not in danger,” the Defense Ministry said, according to TASS.
The MiG-31 (pictured above) is a two-seat, all-weather, long-range supersonic interceptor. The various modifications of the jet can be equipped with different types of air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, hypersonic missiles or even bombs.
