Severe storms have been sweeping the country in Afghanistan for some time now. Within a month, 180 people died as a result of the associated flooding. According to a Taliban spokesman in Kabul, this was due to “mismanagement” by the previous government. The east of the landlocked country is particularly affected.
But even the Taliban, who regained power a year ago, can do little to counter the effects of the storm.
“If the floods increase, the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan will not have as many resources to deal with the effects,” said government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.
Since the radical Islamist Taliban came to power last August, international aid programs have been drastically reduced. The West fears that aid could flow directly into the Taliban’s pockets.
