Two people were killed and 222 injured in a major overnight fire following a gas explosion in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, according to government information. Kenyan government spokesman Isaac Maigua Mwaura wrote on Friday on the short message service X, formerly Twitter, that a truck full of gas exploded late Thursday evening in the Embakasi district. This led to a “huge fireball” that spread.
Numerous shops and residential buildings caught fire, the government spokesman explained. Two Kenyans were killed. 222 people were injured and taken to hospitals. The Kenyan Red Cross had previously reported nearly 300 injuries.

On Friday morning, numerous firefighters were still extinguishing the flames, a journalist from the AFP news agency reported at the scene. Thick black smoke rose. Embakasi is located in the southeast of Nairobi.
