According to the police, the liquid with which climate activists smeared a monument to the constitution not far from the German Bundestag in Berlin was not petroleum.
“The liquid was wallpaper glue and dispersion paint,” said a police spokesperson on Sunday. The group “Last Generation” announced on Saturday that supporters had “soaked the glass sculpture “Basic Law 49” in front of the Jakob Kaiser house “in petroleum”.
Parts of the monument smeared
According to the police, they had smeared or poured water on parts of the monument. The police took samples of the liquid, which were then analyzed. The activists had also pasted posters on the glass surfaces of the monument, which included the words “Oil or Fundamental Rights?”
The glass sculpture “Basic Law 49” on the Spree promenade includes 19 panes of glass, each about three meters high. The 19 fundamental rights articles of the Basic Law are engraved in it.
In a video posted on Twitter, climate protesters can be seen pouring a dark liquid from buckets onto the glass walls of the monument. The climate protection activists accuse the federal government of failing to fulfill its obligation under the Basic Law to protect people’s livelihoods and freedoms.
