A truck driver wrongly saved himself four euros in the supermarket. A taped coupon and an observant store detective were his downfall.
Did a lorry driver (37) actually ‘stick’ a sticker with a 50 percent discount on a loaf of bread in Styria and put it on a shepherd’s cheese? And bought a grocer from Graz for almost four euros? Or was the coveted marker already pecking at the cheese when the suspect took it out of the display case, walked to the cash register and unknowingly but wrongly paid four euros less for it?
A criminal judge of the court of Graz-West recently examined this question. Due to the suspicion of fraud, the 37-year-old had to answer with a relevant criminal record (defender Raimund Hofmann).
Diversion and probation
However, the suspect was heavily charged by the store detective. She saw exactly how he stuck the sticker of the bread on the cheese and then went to the cash register to pay.
The truck driver initially denied the crime, but accepted responsibility in criminal court. Incidentally, he made good the damage on the day of the incident. As a result, he got away with distraction and probation.
