The best pizza in Europe this year does not come from Italy as expected, but actually from Vienna. Because owner and pizza maker Francesco Calòs can be happy with the winners’ podium with his special interpretation of the classic marinara. His company “Via Toledo Enopizzeria” in the eighth district was also named the best pizzeria in Austria.
As part of the “Top 50 Pizza in Europe”, Vienna is happy to be the winner this year. For his creation “Nero di Marinara”, Francesco Calòs uses only oregano from his native mountains, garlic from Voghiera and – which is probably unique on a marinara – fillets of the Datterino tomato, which are fried in the pan. Only then will they end up on the popular pizza.
“Mix of tradition and modernity”
“This pizza is, as it were, a mix of tradition and modernity. We have had it on our menu for six months and it has been sensationally well received,” says the owner enthusiastically about his creation.
“Best pizzeria in Austria”
Since its opening, the restaurant “Via Toledo Enopizzeria” in general and Francesco Calò as a pizza chef in particular have regularly received top awards in recent years. This year he can also look forward to the title “Best Pizzeria in Austria”. In 2023 it reached number 4 in Europe’s top 50 pizzas. This year he finally reached the winners podium. Of course, Italy itself has its own ranking.
