From 1 January to 5 March 2023, 54 people died on the Austrian road network. In the comparative period of 2022 there were 49 and in 2021 30. In the past week alone, three motorists, a pedestrian and a passenger in a car were killed in four traffic accidents.
On February 28, 2023, a serious traffic accident occurred in the district of Bludenz, Vorarlberg, resulting in the death of two car occupants. A 90-year-old motorist left the road for unknown reasons in a right turn and collided with his car against a tree. The vehicle then crossed another road, catapulted it into the air and flipped several times down a steep slope. The car came to rest on its side against a wall of a service building. The 80-year-old passenger and driver were taken to hospital with serious injuries, where they died.
Three people were killed last week on provincial roads L and two on local roads. Two road deaths had to be reported in Vorarlberg and one each in Carinthia, Upper Austria and Salzburg.
The suspected main cause of the accident was inattention/distraction in two cases and inappropriate speed in one case. In the event of an accident, the cause could not be clarified until now. Three accidents were single-vehicle accidents, two fatalities were foreigners and one driver was not wearing a seatbelt.
