The government of France this Monday agreed with the main distribution chains to create a shopping basket “anti inflation” to guarantee basic needs at low cost and to alleviate the impact of price increases on consumers. Under the new measure, each distributor will decide which basic products to include in that basket, which will bear a common label called “anti-inflation quarter“.

The French government had already proposed a few months ago to the major supermarket chains to create a basket to contain food inflation, such as the second vice president of the Spanish government, Yolanda Díaz, who already opened the door last September to a . to set a price limit on staple food. but so far the answer had been no.

The French Minister of Economy, Bruno Le Maire, has explained to the media that “it will be a huge, effective and protective device”. Likewise, he added that these products will have “the lowest possible price” at the expense of distribution margins, not farmers or industrialists, and that it will mean a global cost of “several hundreds of millions of euros” in that quarter.

The new “anti-inflation” basket is expected to be launched in the next days. The minister has said that this measure is intended to “protect our compatriots as much as possible against rising prices” and to apply the principle that “the cost of inflation must be shared”.

There will be no common list of productsno minimum of products, but each chain will decide which and how many to choose, but all selected products will bear a common logo with the colors of the French flag and the inscription “anti-inflation quarter”.

The minister has also suggested that when this new measure expires in June, he will ask industrialists to reopen price negotiations with distribution groups, without waiting until early next year. For example, he wants industrialists to lower their selling prices if the trends of recent days are confirmed.

All this at the gates of the general strike in France, where the sixth major mobilization will take place on Tuesday against the reform that intends to postpone the retirement age and which the trade unions expect a wide follow-up.
