According to NATO intelligence, Russian troops lost five times more soldiers than Ukraine in the battle for the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut in the Donetsk region.
A North Atlantic Alliance military official said that despite these disagreements, Kiev is suffering huge losses in defense of Bakhmut, according to the independent Russian news portal “Meduza”, citing US television channel CNN.
Huge bloody war
The war in Ukraine is considered extremely bloody. “Der Spiegel” reported in January that the Ukrainian army loses a three-digit number of soldiers every day in the battle for the city, according to German secret services. According to CNN, Ukrainian officials have repeatedly emphasized that the Ukrainian side inflicts significant damage on the Russian side during the fighting for Bakhmut. A large number of vehicles were also destroyed.
According to Oleksandr Syrski, an influential commander of the Ukrainian ground forces, “the offensive potential of the enemy has been reduced”. And the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, even assumes that the continuation of the defense of Bakhmut is one of the most important achievements of the war.
Wagner mercenaries also in action
Bakhmut, where according to Ukrainian sources only a few thousand of the once more than 70,000 inhabitants live, has been fought since the end of the summer. The city is the main part of the defense line between Siversk and Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast, established after the Russian conquest of Sieverodonetsk and Lysychansk.
If the city falls, the Russian troops gain access to the major cities of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk. With this, a complete conquest of the Donetsk region is approaching. On the Russian side, mercenaries from the infamous Wagner troop are also involved in the battle – including recruited prisoners.
