Dramatic scenes unfolded Monday morning at a ski resort in Vorarlberg. An eight-year-old boy slipped out of a chair in an elevator and was able to hold on to the footrest of the safety bar with only one hand. Moments later, the child lost his strength and fell eight meters.
The accident happened shortly before 11 a.m. in the Gargellen ski area at the four-person chairlift. The boy took a ski course and wanted to go up the mountain with a 14-year-old girl and another seven-year-old boy. But the two younger children already had problems getting into the chairlift – their skis got tangled.
Girl held the child by the right arm
They also failed to close the safety bar as the chair moved out of the station. The accident happened during one of the attempts: the eight-year-old lost his footing and slipped out of the chair. “He could only hold on to the footrest of the protective bar with his left hand,” the Vorarlberg police reported. “The 14-year-old girl also held his right arm as best she could.”
But at the third lift support, both children lost their strength, the eight-year-old fell and landed in the snow. He suffered serious injuries in the collision. The boy had to be flown to the LKH Feldkirch by rescue helicopter.
