A man convicted of murdering his wife and daughter in 2009 was sentenced to death in Texas on Tuesday. Gary Green, 51, received a lethal injection in the city of Huntsville and was pronounced dead at 7:07 p.m.
Fourteen years ago, Green stabbed his wife and drowned their six-year-old daughter in a bathtub. According to media reports, on the morning of the tragedy he found a letter from his wife announcing that “five lives would be lost”. After all, he did not kill his wife’s two sons, but tried to take his own life.
Green’s lawyers fought to have the death sentence overturned. They argued, among other things, with the alleged mental disorders of their client.
Seventh execution of the death penalty this year
It is the seventh death sentence handed down in the United States this year. Recently, an African-American man convicted of triple murder was executed in Texas in early February, even though his attorney had complained of racial bias in the 54-year-old’s trial. Despite massive criticism, many states maintain the death penalty.
