Bottlenecks overcome – Ukraine takes a deep breath: “Hardest winter is over”

Date:

Ukraine believes that the power supply problems have been overcome for now – unless new Russian attacks damage the system. “The harshest winter in our history is over,” Ukrenerho chief Volodymyr Kudrytsky said on Ukrainian television on Wednesday. There has been no power shortage for the past 25 days and no shortage is in sight.

“The electricity system is now able to meet existing consumption and this is a very good sign for all of us,” said Kudryzkyj. He attributed the improved situation to successful repairs to the power grid and the completed maintenance of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants. Due to the spring flood, hydroelectric power plants produced more electricity. Higher temperatures meant lower consumption.

help from abroad
Since last October, Russia has repeatedly fired missiles to destroy Ukraine’s electricity and heat supplies. In all parts of the country, this led to hourly and daily outages of electricity, district heating and water. However, the Ukrainians always managed to repair the broken network. Generators for power generation and transformers were sent from abroad. Electricity imports also helped, Kudryzkyj said.

New attacks can again compromise the system
“Of course, new attacks, if they are carried out on a large scale, can change that balance,” he said. “But if there are no large-scale attacks, we will see that our energy system can do without shortages.”
