Lampedusa is bursting at the seams again: within 24 hours, 1,175 migrants have arrived on the southern Italian island. About 30 boats took the migrants from Chad, Syria, Sudan, Yemen, Senegal and other African countries from Tunisia to Italy.
A shipwreck occurred off the coast of Lampedusa on Wednesday evening. 20 migrants, mainly from Cameroon and Ivory Coast, were rescued by an Italian Coast Guard vessel. The body of a young woman was recovered. The Coast Guard had already rescued 38 migrants on board a boat on Thursday, including 11 women and a child.
Sea travel was not easy due to the bad weather conditions, report the arrived migrants, who were housed on the island in a reception center for refugees. At the moment there are 1300 people here, while the hotspot only has room for 400 people.

The aid organization “Alarm Phone” reported that 80 people on board a boat in Maltese waters were in trouble. The boat was not seaworthy due to engine damage, the NGO reported. An aircraft from the EU border control service Frontex has already sighted the boat.
