Shortly before noon on Thursday, a group of nine snowshoe hikers was hit by a piece of snow in the Pinzgau in Salzburg. Two people were injured.
According to police, the German civilians were on their way from the Krimmler Achental to the Richterhütte and had taken off their snowshoes to trudge up a steep northwest slope. The avalanche erupted at about 2,300 meters above sea level, taking everyone involved with it.
The slab of snow was about 150 meters long, 60 meters wide and 30 to 70 centimeters high. The entire group was partially buried in the avalanche run-out area, but the hikers were all able to free themselves from the snow.
