Eight people have died and eight were injured tonight in a room of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in the German city Hamburg (north of the country) after allegedly being shot at by a former member of the congregation. The 35-year-old gunman was among the dead. In addition, eight were injured and 17 who left the religious center unharmed.
Security forces received reports of a shooting shortly afterwards 9 p.m. local time this Thursday and a police patrol that was near the religious temple, near Gross Brushsouth of the city’s airport, went on the spot.
The building where the attack took place has three floors and is located on the Deelbögestraat. Local media have reported that members of Jehovah’s Witnesses meet twice a week at the Kingdom Hall.
Hamburg’s mayor, Peter Tschentscher, described what was happening in the city as “horrific”, and in the same sentence, the German chancellor, Olaf Scholtz, has said the shooting “is an act of brutal violence”, and has expressed that his thoughts are “with the victims and their families”. The European Commission’s Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson has condemned the “despicable” attack.
