The southern Italian island of Lampedusa continues to struggle with strong migratory movements. More than 3,000 migrants have arrived in Lampedusa since Wednesday – a record number. Since the beginning of 2023, 17,500 people have reached Italy after sea journeys across the Mediterranean.
A boat carrying 42 migrants, including five women and a minor, sank off the coast of Cutro on Thursday evening. First aid was rendered by the crew of a Tunisian fishing boat. When the Italian Coast Guard answered the distress call and rescued the castaways, the boat had already sunk. Several migrants from Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Nigeria were hospitalized with hypothermia. Survivors said there were no missing and they left Sfax in Tunisia on Wednesday.
Since the beginning of 2023, 17,500 people have arrived in Italy following sea voyages across the Mediterranean, compared to 5,976 in the same period in 2022. Most migrants come from Ivory Coast, Guinea, Bangladesh and Tunisia.
The Tunisian coastguard rescued 1,008 migrants aboard boats in distress on Friday night. Most had left the Tunisian cities of Sfax, Lerkennah, Madia and Sousse.
The Emergency Life Support ship that rescued 105 migrants on a damaged dinghy in international waters off the coast of Libya on Tuesday night has now arrived at the port of the Adriatic town of Brindisi. Among them were several children. According to the captain, Domenico Pugliese, all of the rescued are in good condition, although many of them have wounds on their bodies from their time in Libya.
Prison sentences of up to 30 years are provided for traffickers who cause the deaths of migrants (see video above). There will be a new criminal offense for those who cause death or grievous bodily harm through human trafficking. The hotspots for returning migrants without an immigration permit in Italy are being expanded.
