In Vienna, Traude B. wore an FFP2 mask for protection, police officers detained the woman, but calmed her: there is currently no punishment!
“Actually, we should punish you. Because you are masked,” three police officers on the Praterstern told a surprised pensioner. Her name is Gertraude B. The 87-year-old’s “crime”: she wore a corona protective mask – on her age justifiable concern – and since 1 March that is considered a disguise with a fine of at least 150 euros.
“At least you could have said that in public“
“But the police officers were very friendly and only issued a warning,” says the lady, who says she is anything but anarchist. What annoys her: under the Corona hotline 1450 nobody knew about anything, she was brushed away in the town hall. “You could at least have announced that publicly.” But what does it actually look like legally?
The “Anti-Face Covering Act”, passed in 2017 as “Burka Ban”, really only allows wearing an FFP2 mask if you can prove the need for it with a certificate. Actually. Because the police reassured: especially in the coming months they will act “particularly proportionate”, they say. “If the person can make credible a health reason, there is no administrative violation.” However, this should not have been discussed as far as the Praterstern.
