A thief was caught in a half-blow robbery and made a breakneck attempt to escape. He was able to escape – but only for now.
Wild scenes took place in northern Burgenland on Friday morning. An unknown person had waited in Halbturn until a homeowner with his elderly mother had left the building and entered the building through the back entrance. While the daughter-in-law was on the phone on the first floor and did not hear anything, the perpetrator searched the rooms on the ground floor. He found what he was looking for in a box in the bedroom. He wrapped the jewelry in a jacket and wanted to leave.
Loot lost while escaping
But just then, the homeowner came back with his mother and spoke to the man. The stranger tried to flee in panic, ran to a locked gate and was briefly detained by the homeowner. But the thief managed to break free and escape. But he dropped the jacket with the jewelry.
Cross the border at lightning speed
The alerted police immediately started a search. Moments later, the man’s car – a black VW Passat with a Hungarian license plate – was found near Donnerskirchen. At the border crossing at St. Margarethen, the police tried to stop him, but the fugitive accelerated and drove on at breakneck speed towards Sopron. A stop was not possible. At an intersection, the stranger lost control of the car and slid across the roadway with blocked tires.
Not the first coup
But even after that, he was able to continue his escape. At Fertőrákos he undertook a suicidal overtaking maneuver and was eventually able to escape. But he won’t be able to feel safe for too long. The license plate is known and has been sent to the Hungarian police. It may not have been the first coup, either. The getaway car had only recently been stolen in Mattersburg.
