In principle, Pope Francis can envisage abolishing celibacy for priests. In the interview, Francis recalled that married men are allowed as priests in the Eastern Catholic Church. “There is no contradiction in the fact that a priest can get married,” said the 86-year-old.
Francis has been asked for years from various angles to abolish or relax celibacy for priests.
Only on Friday did the delegates of the German synodal assembly for the reform of the Catholic Church approve a text that aims to open up celibacy. The pope should be asked to examine the future of compulsory celibacy.
Temporarily celibate
When asked by news portal Infobae whether celibacy can be revised, Francis answered yes. He explained that celibacy in the Western Church is a “temporary requirement” and thus “provisional” as opposed to, for example, ordination to the priesthood “forever”. But Francis doubted that more men would choose the priesthood if they were allowed to marry at the same time.
