In Great Britain, the number of infections with the corona virus has risen sharply again. According to estimates from the National Bureau of Statistics ONS on Friday, a total of 3.5 million people were infected in the week ending July 6, nearly 800,000 more than the week before.
The number of corona patients in clinics also increased again. This is mainly due to the spread of the ommicron variants BA.4 and BA.5, it is said. “There are no signs of the number of infections declining, but approaching levels last seen in March at the height of the BA.2 wave,” said ONS expert Sarah Crofts.
Infections increased significantly in all four parts of the country, namely England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The estimates are considered the most reliable information on the infection situation in Britain. The official government published contamination figures only include cases that are still being detected and reported despite lower testing capacities.
Indian variant detected in seven countries
The corona variant BA.2.75, which was first discovered in India in June, has now been found in seven countries, including Germany. Compared to its predecessor BA.2, BA.2.75 has eight mutations in the spike protein (photo below). In BA.5 there are currently only three changes from BA.2.
The mutation could thus trigger a new wave of infections. Given the few BA.2.75 cases to date and the lack of studies, it is still unclear what effect the variant will actually have on the Covid 19 pandemic.
