A 38-year-old man was sentenced Friday at the regional court in Feldkirch to four years in prison for various crimes, including aggravated coercion and rape. Despite the defendant’s statements of innocence, the Senate believed the victim was awarded $6,000 in damages. The verdict is not final.
The 38-year-old, who hails from Iraq, met the 30-year-old from Vorarlberg in 2020 in a bar in Dornbirn. He was already married to a woman from his native country, with whom he has five children. The 30-year-old converted to Islam before the suspect and wore a headscarf. An Islamic marriage followed and the 30-year-old became the Iraqi’s second wife.
violence and threats
According to the woman, he repeatedly instructed and suppressed her – including by force. There were blows, punches, threats. In the spring of 2021, the woman from Vorarlberg became pregnant. According to the indictment, her husband demanded that the pregnancy be terminated because she entered a Catholic church during a baptism in a circle of acquaintances. He was said to be in danger of being kidnapped in Iraq and killed. The woman gave in and had the pregnancy terminated.
Only a little later – in the summer of 2021 – the 38-year-old forced his wife to have sex against her will in the shared apartment in the Bregenz district, according to the court. Yet the 30-year-old did not report the perpetrator until he gained access to her apartment in an unknown manner after the relationship ended.
The jury did not believe the statements of the 38-year-old, who insisted on his innocence. He was sentenced to four years in prison, the sentence is not final.
