After the evacuation of the Lützerath settlement in North Rhine-Westphalia, there were again clashes on Tuesday between demonstrators and police officers. Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg went to the frontline just like the days before and was arrested by the police.
Police confirmed on Tuesday that the 20-year-old Fridays for Future icon was part of a group that moved to the edge of a lignite mine and was then stopped and taken away. The mine has a sharp edge, staying there is dangerous and forbidden. A dpa photographer found that Thunberg was carried away by three officers and dropped off after more than 50 meters for an identity check. About 60 to 70 activists had previously gathered at the edge of the demolition line for a protest.
Released after identity verification
A police spokeswoman confirmed that Thunberg had been taken into custody for establishing personal data. Once the identities of all involved were known, the group would be wheeled out of the danger zone at the Garzweiler lignite mine in buses and then released.
Lützerath was also deposed. According to the police, people had previously left a demonstration and were heading for the opencast mine and Lützerath. This led to a confrontation with the police.
Several adhesive campaigns in NRW
Before that, there were several other protests in the state. Climate activists from the Extinction Rebellion group detained the NRW Ministry of the Interior in Düsseldorf. About a dozen people, including a mother and child, were involved in the action, police and interior ministry spokesmen said. They protested the evacuation of the lignite mining settlement and demanded the resignation of the NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul (CDU) over the police operation there. The activists also complained last week about police brutality and criminalization during the eviction.
After some time, the emergency services put an end to the action: some demonstrators left voluntarily, others were taken away. The protesters, who had stuck to windows, were released by the police. Meanwhile, about 150 demonstrators gathered at the state parliament in Düsseldorf, who then marched in front of the NRW Ministry of Economic Affairs. They also protested against the demolition of Lützerath. A group of the last generation shut down morning traffic in Cologne en masse with a blockade. During the blockade, climate activists taped themselves to a street and held up a banner referring to the Last Generation group.
