British businessman Jim Ratcliffe officially entered the race to buy Manchester United through his company Ineos, one of the world’s largest chemical companies, on Tuesday.
“We have formally entered the process,” a company spokesperson announced to the media, after the Glazer family announced in November their intention to divest the English club.
Ratcliffe, 70, tried unsuccessfully to acquire Chelsea last year with an offer of 4.25 billion pounds (4.8 billion euros).
The businessman, one of the richest men in the United Kingdom, was born in the suburbs of Manchester and made sure United was the team he cheered for in his childhood.
His announcement came after the ‘red devils’ beat Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday in the derby and remain nine points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.
