A group of hooded thugs beat up former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis on Friday night. The 61-year-old had previously been recognized by some 20 people at a restaurant – when he eventually left he was knocked to the ground by several assailants and injured.
First, the 61-year-old was insulted from the street. When he finally fell to the ground, the group of hooded men kicked him and punched him in the face. The ex-minister suffered a broken nose and was treated in hospital, Greek media reported on Saturday.
Attackers made allegations about the 2015 debt crisis
Varoufakis himself thanked Twitter for the solidarity he received after the attack. He also denied reports that the attackers were autonomists, anarchists or leftists. It was previously hired thugs who accused him of selling Greece abroad during the 2015 debt crisis during his tenure as finance minister.
His party Mera25 described the attack as “fascist”. The economist is in parliament today.
