Euskadi increased from 16,519 farms in 2009 to 11,276 registered farms in 2020 (of which more than 5,000 were lost). In Navarra the decline is less pronounced: from 15,441 to 12,928.

The number of agricultural holdings has decreased in recent years both in Euskadi and Navarre, mainly due to the “exit” of the activity of their employees. has also decreased the total agricultural area, unlike the state, which has enforced it.

In concrete terms, Euskadi has disappeared 16 519 farms in 2009, op 11 276 registered in 2020 (loses more than five thousand). In Navarra the decline is less pronounced and transient from 15,441 to 12,928.

Concerning the average size of these companies, in Euskadi have grown significantly in recent years, from an average of 11.53 hectares per company to 15.63 hectares. In Navarre, the size of these areas is also growing, from an average of 35.33 hectares to 39.55 hectares.

Fewer livestock farms…

The steepest descent occurs on livestock farms (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry and rabbits). In just eleven years, Euskadi has lost 41% of these farms, while Navarre has lost slightly less, at 22%. A decline that occurs on all farms: in Euskadi more pronounced on the farms of pigs (-67.6%) and birds (-73.2%), and in Navarre in the birds (-72.3%).

…But the number of cattle and pigs is increasing

Although the number of farms has decreased between 2009 and 2020 the volume of cattle and pigs has grown. If we look at the number of cattle, the pigs score one 84% increase, with currently 29,664 people in Euskadi. Of course, there has been a decline in sheep and goat livestock in Euskadi and Navarre (-16% and -21%), while the figures in the state remain stable.

More and more macro farms

Another relevant fact is that when it comes to macro farms, a rising reality, both in pigs and poultry, and especially in Navarra. In this area between 2012 and 2021 the number of macro pig farms has grown from 74 to 94. In Euskadi there is only one, in Álava. Huesca, Lleida and Zaragoza concentrate almost half of the macro pig farms in the entire state.

The weight of the sector

Finally, the primary sector, both in Euskadi and Navarra, has lost weight in recent years. In Euskadi it went from 1.7% to 1% of gross added value (GVA) between 2009 and 2020, and in Navarra from 4% to 3%.
