A case almost similar to that of the Simpsons now took place under Waldviertler’s direction: the Waldviertler landlord – called “Moe” in the Simpsons – found a prank call from “Bart” and his friend just as unfunny. Only the real call brought a nasty aftermath: the prankster risked five years in prison!
Remember the jokes from the Simpsons cartoon where son “Bart” called friends or sister at “Moe’s Tavern” and teased the bartender? When the yellow cartoon boss realized he was the center of a prank, it always ended in bad things he wished on the anonymous caller. There was a similar case in the Waldviertel, which did not end in offensive remarks, but ended up before the regional court of St. Pölten.
Made-up fun on the construction site
The two approximately 30-year-old workers counted without the innkeeper from the Zwettl district when they hatched their jokes on the construction site in Herzogenburg. Because the prank call went completely wrong and ended up as a lawsuit for extortion. Attorney Peter Ozlberger defended the caller.
Just kidding buddy
A worker from the district of Zwettl encouraged his colleague from the neighboring district of Gmünd to make an amusing phone call to a restaurateur friend, which he did. The 31-year-old posed as the district police commander in Zwettl. With a smile he then introduced himself by the name of the innkeeper. The alleged police chief then accused him of serving illegal drinks in his bar during the lockdown.
Joker followed…
There would also be more advertisements due to young people smoking in the dining room. The astonished landlord denied that, the prankster added: “We have video evidence. But if you pay the fine immediately, it will cost 6,000 euros. If not, negotiations will take place and it will cost you 3,000 euros,” Gmünder joked.
The landlord took the whole thing seriously until the end of the call, which led to the Gmünder calling again five minutes later, emphasizing that “we’re all just human” – leave it at a warning. However, the matter was not over for the angry innkeeper.
advertisement – and the mills ground
Before his friend could clear up the matter, he filed a complaint with the public prosecutor’s office. This meant that the mills of the judiciary could no longer be stopped and the case ended up in the regional court of St. Pölten for attempted extortion. “The sentence was five years, so of course my client stopped laughing. However, we were able to convince the judge that it was really fun. After all, my client never asked for money for himself, but for the Krems district administration,” explains Ozlberger out.
