Climate activists painted four prominent buildings in London orange on Monday. The Just Stop Oil group is also behind the recent attacks on paintings in the National Gallery and in The Hague.
Police say the Home Office, the headquarters of the Secret Service MI5, a building belonging to billionaire Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. media group and the headquarters of the Bank of England were hit this time. The activists chose the color orange to match Halloween.
The targets were chosen because they “represent the pillars that support and sustain the strength of the fossil fuel industry – government, security forces, finance and the media.” Police arrested six suspects after the paint attacks.
You belong to the Just Stop Oil group, which is campaigning for the end of oil and gas extraction in the North Sea. Its members have repeatedly carried out actions and blockades in recent weeks, including against famous works of art. In the National Gallery in London, activists doused Vincent van Gogh’s painting “Sunflowers” with tomato soup.
Other action in Paris
In The Hague, protesters clung to Johannes Vermeer’s work The Girl with a Pearl Earring. In Paris, an environmentalist from the group Dernière Rénovation (in English “Last Renovation”) took the French flag from the roof of the Panthéon, the national hall of fame, and tied himself to the flagpole. This was intended, according to the group, to underline the grave danger “posed to the French people because the government is not taking important measures to stop global warming”.
