A case like this is not uncommon in Russia. The man is called up for the war in Ukraine and leaves behind his wife and several small children. However, the partner is dependent on support, which is denied to her by the state. Meanwhile, especially cynical things are piling up.
The online newspaper “Novaya Gazeta. Europe” reported on certain family hardships caused by the Russian invasion. The portal is run by editors of the defunct Novaya Gazeta, which left Russia after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The website is blocked in Russia.
Anastasiya from the Russian city of Novokuznetsk is raising two children with her husband Alexander – five-year-old Alisa and eleven-year-old Varvara. Varvara is from Anastasija’s first marriage. On September 30, 31-year-old Alexander had to go to war – and leave his family behind.
No hospitalization possible
It was only later that Anastasija found out that she was pregnant. The pregnancy turned out to be difficult. For a long time it was not clear whether she could carry the child. She could not comply with the doctors’ insistence that she go to the hospital.
Because there was simply no one with whom she could house the other children in the meantime. Although the baby’s life has been saved in the meantime, it is not clear where she can leave the children during the delivery or how to proceed afterwards.
Authorities treat women particularly harshly
Anastasija has no family and her mother-in-law lives in another city. In addition, Novokuznetsk does not have 24-hour kindergartens or host parents with accommodation. She was therefore forced to contact Russian authorities, who are known for their harassment.
The result is impressive, because she was seriously advised to place the children in an orphanage. “Just try it, you might like it” was the “advice”. The irony of the story: Anastasija grew up as an orphan and had to spend some time in the orphanage herself. Home is the greatest fear of her childhood for her.
Mothers are calling politicians to action
Anastasija is not alone in her story – many families have been hit hard by the war. After the start of the partial mobilization in the autumn, mothers from large families joined forces in the social networks. With their efforts, they now want to persuade the government to take action – mobilizing fathers of large families for war should no longer be possible.
She reports that they have written to President Vladimir Putin and to the State Duma (Russian parliament – editor’s note), among others. All parties reacted and tried to improve the situation – except the party with the most members, United Russia, which stands for the Putin system.
