Ash cloud – The Indonesian volcano Merapi has erupted again

Date:

The Indonesian volcano Merapi on the island of Java erupted again on Saturday. The Center for Volcanology announced that a hot ash plume emerged from the crater within two minutes. As a precaution, some residents of a neighboring village had brought themselves to safety.

However, there is still no order to evacuate people. Authorities have suspended mining and tourism activities near the summit for the time being. Mount Merapi, over 2900 meters high, is one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in Indonesia. When it erupts, a dangerous mixture of dust, rock, lava and hot gas often rushes down the slopes. This time it was a cloud of ash and gas that covered about seven kilometers. It emerged from the crater in just two minutes.

The volcano is located about 35 kilometers north of the city of Yogyakarta on the island of Java. A major eruption in 2010 killed more than 340 people. Tens of thousands fled. Since the end of 2020, an increased alarm level has been in effect again.

130 active volcanoes in the country
There are nearly 130 active volcanoes in all of Indonesia. The island nation is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for seismic tremors.
