Dam burst – deaths from rain and snow in California

The US state of California is currently experiencing heavy rain and snowfall. At least two people have been killed in the recent storms. Many others were asked to leave their homes for safety reasons.

Because there is a risk of flooding, the authorities advised residents to move to higher ground. A dam along the Pajaro River in central California south of Santa Cruz broke Saturday night. Rescue workers helped people who had not left their homes in time. The state of emergency currently applies in 34 of a total of 58 districts.

California has often been plagued by drought and drought in the past, but unusually heavy rainfall has hit the state again and again since January. At higher elevations in California, an unusual amount of snow has fallen in recent weeks.

The reason for the current precipitation is a weather phenomenon called “atmospheric flow”. According to the German weather service, this is “a relatively narrow, directional band of humid, saturated air” that can be as much as 500 kilometers wide and 2,000 kilometers long. Such systems transported much of the water vapor outside the tropics.

According to local emergency services, at least two people have died in the storms in recent days. By the middle of next week, the situation could calm down again.
