When the German Wehrmacht invaded Bregenz on March 12, 1938, the takeover of power by the National Socialists in Vorarlberg had been going on for hours – with numerous arrests.
In the spring of 1938, National Socialism broke out in the state of Vorarlberg not only from the outside. The party structures of the NSDAP were established long before the Anschluss. “The NSDAP may have been as strong in parts of Carinthia and Upper Austria as it was in Vorarlberg,” historian Harald Walser clarifies in an interview with “Krone”. And this despite the ban on the Nazi party in force since 1933. “In Vorarlberg it was only a semi-prohibition anyway. Prominent representatives even held high positions.”
