Julian Hessenthaler, who became famous as the “Ibiza detective”, is free again: After his conviction about a year ago, he now wears an ankle bracelet and is also working again, his lawyer Oliver Scherbaum explained.
Hessenthaler was seen on Monday with his lawyer during a trial at the Vienna Regional Court. It involved an attempt at false testimony (that’s what they’re talking about, in Ibiza’s parliamentary committee of inquiry – the mastermind behind the Ibiza video had appeared as an audience member. His lawyer stated that his client’s anklet was “a few weeks ago” and was “off Interest” participated in the negotiation. Hessenthaler himself did not want to comment for the time being.
Conditional parole after serving two-thirds of sentence
Hessenthaler was sentenced to three and a half years in prison in March 2022 for cocaine trafficking and counterfeiting. This verdict is final, all appeals against it and requests for release of liability have been rejected by the judiciary. Hessenthaler was arrested in Berlin in December 2020, then extradited to Austria and taken into custody, as his lawyer explained. At the beginning of April, he had served at least two-thirds of his sentence and was therefore due for early release.
The national legal system provides for setting off pre-trial detention against court-imposed prison sentences. In Austria, the legal proceedings for the narcotic offense have been settled with this. However, Scherbaum emphasized that a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) was in preparation.
But he became known for another case: Hessenthaler is said to have produced the “Ibiza” video in which the then FPÖ boss and vice-chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache and the then FPÖ club president Johann Gudenus were talking to an alleged Oligarch niece shows.
