In Russia, the conscription age is raised from 18 to 21 years. At the same time, the maximum age is set from 27 to 30 years, reports the Interfax news agency.
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had already announced the changes in December. At the time, observers said Russia’s armed forces would be expanded from 1.15 to 1.5 million people. In fact, the minimum age for conscription in the military is gradually being increased. From next year, people may only be called up at the age of 19, from 2025 at the age of 20 and from 2026 finally at the age of 21.
300,000 additional conscripts
It was said that anyone who wanted to volunteer to join the army at the age of 18 could do so. The upper limit for the military will be raised without intermediate steps from the current 27 to 30 years. Due to the different birth cohorts, the new scheme should provide about 300,000 additional conscripts.
Officially, conscripts are not sent to war in Russia. However, they can also take on other tasks, such as securing the hinterland.
