At least eighteen people were killed in a landslide in western Colombia on Friday. A representative of the Chocó department told AFP that several landslides had blocked a road between the cities of Medellín and Quibdó.
Scores of people then got out of their vehicles and took shelter in a house near the community of Carmen de Atrato. But this was then buried by another landslide.
Some people are still buried
“The information we currently have is 18 deaths,” the official said. Colombian Vice President Francia Márquez also spoke on X (formerly Twitter) about about thirty people injured. The mayor of Carmen de Atrato, Jaime Herrera, told TV channel Caracol Televisión that some people were very seriously injured and a few others were still buried.
Photos published on online platforms showed cars destroyed by masses of earth. It had recently rained heavily in the rainforest area in the west of the South American country.
