Motorway blocked – Five weeks in jail for British climate activists

Date:

A London court sentenced a climate activist to five weeks in jail after blocking a major highway for hours. Three other defendants received suspended sentences.

As reported, the three men and a woman were trapped on the M4 motorway near Heathrow Airport in the autumn of 2021. Traffic was halted for more than two hours, around 10,000 vehicles were affected. The climate activist and climate activists are part of the Insulate Britain group, which has blocked the ring road on several occasions. More than 50 participants were arrested in an action at the end of September 2021.

A preliminary injunction was even issued at that time. It said anyone who resisted could go to jail. In fact, in mid-December, two people were each sentenced to nearly three months in prison for breaking the highway blockade.

Activist does not want to stop
This week a court in London sentenced a 63-year-old activist to five weeks in prison. There were originally supposed to be six, according to the group, but Britain’s prisons are struggling for space, it said. The suspect said he wanted to participate in further actions, the judge said on Monday. At the same time, he stressed that the sentence was lenient because the convict had drawn attention to the important problem of the climate crisis with the blockade. The group got its name because they advocate nationwide home insulation in the UK.

In the future, the penalties for climate activists in the UK will be stricter. The Conservative government wants to ban chaining or stabbing as a form of protest with punishment.
