Anger about submarine plan – The Chinese president does not want to talk to Biden

Date:

The government in Washington has been vigorously trying to negotiate with Beijing on geopolitical issues for some time now. Last week, US President Joe Biden’s national security adviser even said talks between the US head of state and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping could be expected “sometime in the near future”. But nobody in China wants to hear about it.

China and the US have maintained necessary communications, Beijing foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told the press on Tuesday when asked about a possible date. “We believe the value and importance of communication is to increase understanding, to manage differences, and not for the sake of communication,” the spokesperson added.

Biden expected conversation after balloon affair
When journalists asked Monday if he would speak to Xi soon, Biden replied “yes”. However, the US president did not name a date. As early as mid-February, Biden said he expected to talk to Xi about what the US has dubbed the spy balloon over US skies.

Relations between the US and China in general are strained due to a slew of controversial issues. The Biden administration sees China as the biggest geopolitical challenge. Public warnings from the United States that China could potentially supply Russia with weapons that could be used in the war against Ukraine have angered Beijing.

Anger in Beijing over US submarine plan
China’s leaders are also angry about the nuclear-powered submarine fleet planned by the US, Britain and Australia in the Indo-Pacific. The three states exhibited a “typical Cold War mentality,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang. The most recent joint statement by the three states shows they are fearless to go down a “wrong and dangerous path” to defend “their own geopolitical interests”. The concerns of the international community would be completely ignored.

At a meeting in San Diego on Monday, US President Biden and the heads of government of Britain and Australia, Rishi Sunak and Anthony Albanese, announced a concrete timetable for Australia to be equipped with nuclear-powered submarines to boost military deterrence in the Indo -Pacific region.
