Damage to EU economy – Hungary rejects nuclear sanctions against Russia

Date:

EU countries have already drafted nine sanctions packages against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. In addition to entry bans and asset freezes, the punitive measures mainly affect the energy and financial sectors. So far, the Russian nuclear industry has been spared. And it must stay that way if the Hungarian government has its way. Prime Minister Viktor Orban emphasized again on Friday that he wanted to block such projects.

“That’s out of the question,” Orban said on state radio. His government will not allow nuclear power to be included in the sanctions. Ukraine demands that the European Union include the Russian state-owned company Rosatom in the sanctions.

Sanctions were repeatedly torpedoed
The Paks nuclear power plant in Hungary was built with Russian assistance. Construction work is currently taking place on this site, about 100 kilometers south of the capital Budapest. Together with Rosatom, they want to expand the capacity with two more reactor blocks. Orban had repeatedly torpedoed plans for punitive measures against Russia in recent months.

The Hungarian Prime Minister argued that the sanctions have not significantly weakened Russia, but have seriously damaged the European economy. For example, because of Hungary’s opposition, the EU had to abandon planned sanctions against the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, and a full oil embargo.
