“Use resource” – drought: Venice now wants to desalinate sea water

Date:

Venice is now trying to take action against the dire water shortage with a new measure. In addition to fines for wasting water, desalination plants are also being considered as a solution.

The president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, does not rule out the use of seawater desalination plants in case the current drought lasts longer. “We have a resource, the sea, that we should use. Converting salt water into fresh water takes a lot of energy. The Israelis are doing it, other countries and cities like Dubai, where there are gardens and palm trees, are doing it. We now have to consider how much this electricity consumption is going to burden us,” Zaia said on Tuesday.

At the same time, he called on the inhabitants of Veneto not to waste water. That is why he called on his fellow citizens to limit the watering of gardens. “The less water we use, the better,” stressed the Veneto president.

Levels of large lakes have plummeted
Italy is experiencing warm weeks. In the north of the country, temperatures are 1.44 degrees above the average for the time of year. The level of large lakes in northern Italy, such as Lake Garda, Lake Como and Lake Maggiore, has fallen sharply. The farmers’ association Coldiretti warned that agriculture would suffer enormously.
