The unemployment rate drops to 9.1% in the Basque Country in the first quarter and the employment rate increases by 8,300

The unemployment rate for men stands at 8.5% and the unemployment rate for women at 9.7%. The Euskadi rate is above that of the European Union, which stands at 6.2%, but below that of Spain, which rises to 12.6%.

The unemployment rate in the Basque Autonomous Community, it fell to 9.1% in the first quarter of this year, 0.8 percentage points less than in the previous quarter, which means 8300 fewer unemployed than at the end of 2021.

The Basque Statistical Institute, Eustat, has published the population survey in relation to activity corresponding to the first quarter of 2022, which shows that the number of unemployed people, i.e. those looking for work and available for work, is estimated at 95,200, which is 8,300 less than the previous quarter.

The number of unemployed men, 46,500 in total, fell by 4,900 (-9.5%), while that of women, 48,700, fell by 3,400 (-6.5%). In this way the unemployment rate for men comes to 8.5% and the rate for women to 9.7%.

In terms of studies, the largest drop in unemployment occurred among the highly educated (-1.5 percentage points) to 5.2%. That of those with primary education is 12.8% and that of those with secondary and secondary education is 11.1%.

By province, the number of unemployed fell by 7,000 in Bizkaia and the unemployment rate fell by 1.3 points to 10%.

In Gipuzkoa, where there are 24,000 unemployed, the unemployment rate fell by 2,400 and the unemployment rate by 0.7 percentage point to 7%, while in Álava the number of unemployed grew by 1,100 and the rate reached 10.4% (+0.8).

In the capitals, unemployment in Bilbao fell by 6,200 people, in San Sebastián by 400, while it rose by 1,400 in Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The unemployment rate of 9.1% in the Basque Country is above that of the European Union, which stands at 6.2%, but below that of Spain, which rises to 12.6%.

The activity For its part, it grew by 8,300 people in the first quarter compared to the previous one, with a total of 953,800 employees, 0.9% more than in the fourth quarter of 2021.

In the past year, the number of people employed increased by 28,600 and the number of unemployed decreased by 19,200, meaning the unemployment rate jumped from 11% to 9.1% in the first quarter of 2021.

The employment rate, calculated as the percentage of working people between 16 and 64 years of age over the total of these ages, rose 0.5 point compared to the previous quarter and stood at 69%. This percentage reaches 72.4% for men and 65.7% for women.

Due to the evolution of the labor force and the unemployed, the activity rate will be 56.3% in the first quarter of 2022, the same as in the three previous months.

Employment per province increased by 6,200 people in Gipuzkoa compared to the end of 2021 and in Bizkaia by 5,100; on the other hand, it decreases in Álava by 3000. The highest occupancy rate is that of Gipuzkoa with 71.1%, followed by Álava with 68.5% and Bizkaia, 67.9%.

In the capitals, it is in Bilbao where employment increases the most with 3,500 more employed persons; It is followed by San Sebastián (+1,100) and in Vitoria-Gasteiz the occupancy rate drops by 2,600 people.

The largest increase in employment occurred among men (+5,800), among women with 2,400.

By sector, the employed population increased by 5,500 people (+0.8%) in the service sector, by 1,400 (+17.5%) in the primary sector, by 800 people in construction (+1.4%) and by 700 in industry (+0.4%) .

Eustat also points out that the number of households with all active unemployed has decreased by 5,700.
