In 2012, the first sod was laid for the Semmering Base Tunnel and more than ten years later, the mountain has almost been conquered. Two more pipes connected two weeks ago. We took the opportunity to provide a really deep insight into the engineering masterpiece.
The door of the construction hoist closes and it starts moving with a jerk. It gets dark for two minutes, then we are 400 meters below the Styrian Fröschnitzgraben. The yellow rubber boots land on damp earth, lights reveal a completely different world. It is dark, the smell of stone and mud hangs in the 15 degrees air, concrete mixers drive by, about 200 miners and engineers work in the horseshoe-shaped corridors.
